How many times have you walked past a downtown building and wondered what it used to be—or who once stepped through its doors?

A New Port Richey Historic Walking Tour by local historian Gary Vitacco-Robles invites residents and visitors to take a closer look at the places that make our city special. Whether you’ve called New Port Richey home for decades or are planning your first visit, this book offers a reason to slow down, look up, and explore.

Published by The History Press, the 208-page guide combines local stories, illustrations, and archival photographs from the West Pasco Historical Society. Readers can discover the early residents, silent film personalities, writers, and sports figures connected to our community, along with historic buildings that remain and landmarks that have disappeared. Explore the book on Amazon.

The appeal is simple: learning what happened in a place can change the way you see it. A familiar storefront becomes a conversation starter. An architectural detail catches your eye. A routine walk becomes an opportunity to connect with the community’s past.

The book also serves as a companion to Tides of Time, our downtown public art experience, giving readers more historical context as they explore. View the book’s description.

Presented by New Port Richey Main Street in partnership with the City of New Port Richey, Tides of Time was created to celebrate the city’s 100th anniversary. It features 11 permanent bronze sculptures by St. Petersburg artist Gillian Harper, connecting art with the stories of historically significant downtown locations.

Each sculpture offers another reason to pause. Visitors can scan its accompanying QR code to learn about the location’s history, the artist, and the community investors who helped bring the project to life. Stops include Sims Park, the Hacienda Hotel, Richey Suncoast Theatre, and other places woven into downtown’s story. Explore Tides of Time and its locations.

Together, the book and art walk offer an inviting way to spend a day downtown. Bring your copy, choose a few stops, and leave time for the discoveries in between. Grab a coffee, browse a local shop, or settle in for lunch while you take in the neighborhood around you.

At New Port Richey Main Street, we love opportunities that help people build a stronger connection to downtown. Understanding the stories behind our streets and buildings gives us more reasons to appreciate them—and to keep exploring.

Ready to see familiar places with fresh eyes? Pick up a copy for yourself or the local history lover in your life, and let your next downtown adventure begin.
