As America prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary, Main Street America is highlighting the places, people, and stories that helped shape communities across the country. Here in New Port Richey, one of those stories connects our historic downtown to one of the most legendary names in golf: Gene Sarazen.

Known as one of the greatest golfers of his era, Gene Sarazen made New Port Richey part of his story during the city’s early boom years. In the late 1920s, Sarazen and his wife stayed at the historic Hacienda Hotel while their home was being built in Jasmin Point, a riverfront neighborhood that attracted some of the most recognizable names of the time.

Sarazen’s connection to New Port Richey reflects a fascinating chapter in our city’s history. During this period, New Port Richey was gaining attention as a destination for celebrities, athletes, business leaders, and visitors drawn to its natural beauty, riverfront charm, and growing downtown. The Hacienda Hotel served as a social and cultural gathering place, helping establish the city as a vibrant destination along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Sarazen’s local legacy also extends into the game of golf itself. Historical accounts connect him to the Jasmin Point Golf Course and credit New Port Richey as part of the story behind the development of the modern sand wedge, an innovation that would go on to change the sport.

Stories like this remind us that history does not only happen in large cities or famous landmarks. It happens on Main Streets, in local hotels, neighborhoods, businesses, parks, and gathering places. It happens in communities like New Port Richey, where national figures crossed paths with local life and helped shape the identity of a place.

Through the Main Street America 250 initiative, New Port Richey Main Street is proud to help share the stories that make our downtown and historic district meaningful. Gene Sarazen’s time in New Port Richey is more than a golf story. It is part of the larger story of a city that has long welcomed dreamers, builders, visitors, and visionaries.

As we look toward America’s 250th anniversary, we celebrate the history that happened here — and the history still being made every day in Downtown New Port Richey.
